Indonesian President Joko Widodo is criticized by academics because the country is considered to be flawed in democracy

Mytips.id, NEWS - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has addressed the actions of academics and professors from various universities who have come forward to express their opinions and criticisms on democracy in our country, which is seen as a signal that the state of the nation is not currently in good shape. 

The President, Indonesia's number one figure, highlighted that every criticism and opinion expressed should be respected as a democratic right. "It is a democratic right that we must respect," said Jokowi, as quoted through the Presidency's official Youtube channel on Saturday (3/2/2024). 

Previously, the Head of State also encouraged citizens and educational institutions to criticize the government.

The 7th President of Indonesia believes that expressing criticism is the right of every citizen. He made this statement after attending the official opening ceremony of the 16th Congress of the Ansor Youth Movement at Tanjung Priok Port, North Jakarta, on Friday (2/2/2024). 

"Yes, it is the democratic right of every person to speak and express their opinions, go ahead," he said.

For your information, the academic community of the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) has voiced their criticisms towards President Jokowi, following the footsteps of Gadjah Mada University (UGM). 

UII academics released a statement expressing their concerns about the current political developments leading up to the 2024 Elections. The statement was represented and read out by UII Rector Prof. Fathul Wahid in front of the Auditorium Prof. KH. Kahar Muzakir at the UII campus on Thursday (1/2/2024).

In their statement, UII considered that President Jokowi has undermined the spirit of nationalism within the Indonesian government. 

Previously, academics from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) also expressed their concerns and disappointment with the political maneuvers carried out by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). The aspirations of these academics were conveyed through a petition read out at Balairung UGM on Wednesday (31/1/2024). 

The Bulaksumur petition addressed to Jokowi highlighted the democracy deviations committed by the President. On the other hand, the academic community of the University of Indonesia (UI) also felt compelled to warn the 7th President of Indonesia not to interfere in the ongoing democratic process in the country and urged Jokowi to maintain neutrality in the 2024 Presidential Election.

The President's response to the criticisms demonstrates his acknowledgement and respect for the democratic rights of individuals, including academics and citizens alike. 

His acceptance of criticism is indicative of a leader who values the principles of democracy and encourages open dialogue. It is vital for a nation's progress that differing opinions are heard and considered, even if they challenge those in power.
