After Royal Ship was attacked by Houthis in the Red Sea, now Britain is ready to recognize Palestinian sovereignty

Mytips.id, NEWS - The United Kingdom has announced its readiness to officially advance the process of recognizing the sovereignty of the State of Palestine, according to British Foreign Minister David Cameron.

Lord Cameron, as he is often referred to, stated that Palestinian citizens should be given a political horizon to promote peace in the Middle East. Speaking to the Conservative Middle East Council at the House of Commons, Cameron emphasized the need for the people of Palestine to demonstrate "irreversible progress" towards a two-state solution.

"We must begin to determine what the future Palestinian state would look like, what would be formed within it, and how it would operate," he said, as reported on Saturday, February 3.

The UK has stated its readiness to officially advance the momentum in recognizing the sovereignty of the Palestinian state, according to UK Foreign Minister David Cameron.

Lord Cameron, as he is often referred to, stated that Palestinians should be granted a political horizon to drive peace in the Middle East. Speaking to the Middle East Conservative Council in the House of Commons, Cameron emphasized that the Palestinian people must demonstrate "irreversible progress" towards a two-state solution.

"We must start determining the nature of the future Palestinian state, what it will encompass, how it will operate," he said, as quoted on Saturday, February 3, 2024. "When that happens, we, along with our allies, will consider the issue of recognizing the Palestinian state, including at the UN. This could be one of the factors that help make this process irreversible," Cameron told the council.

According to the BBC, the foreign minister suggested that formal and diplomatic recognition of the Palestinian state could be given, not as part of a final peace agreement, but during negotiations.

The foreign minister also urged Israel to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza and called it "absurd" that crucial British and other aid is being sent back at the border.

Cameron stated that the past 30 years had been a story of Israeli failure, as it failed to provide security for its citizens. He emphasized that only by acknowledging this failure could peace and progress be achieved. The UK has long supported a two-state solution, wherein Israel and Palestine can coexist in separate states.

However, Cameron suggested that the UK should grant formal and diplomatic recognition to the Palestinian state, not as part of a final peace agreement, but earlier, during the negotiations themselves.

However, before this recognition can happen, Cameron said the leaders of Hamas must leave Gaza for the UK to be able to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state. "You cannot achieve a two-state solution if Gaza remains under the control of those responsible for the October 7 attacks," he said.

At the same time, there must be a new Palestinian authority that "quickly stands up with technocratic and competent leaders" capable of governing Gaza, he said.

Lord Cameron added, "Alongside this, the most important thing is to provide a political horizon for the Palestinian people so that they can see there will be irreversible progress towards a two-state solution and, most importantly, the establishment of a Palestinian state."

"We have a responsibility there because we must start determining the nature of the future Palestinian state, what will be encompassed within it, how it will operate, and, most importantly, look at this issue, and when that happens, we and our allies will consider the recognition of the Palestinian state, including at the UN," he added.

Husam Zomlot, head of the Palestinian mission in London, described Lord Cameron's comments as "historic" because, for the first time, the UK is considering recognizing the Palestinian state "as a contribution to a peaceful solution rather than an outcome."
