Is Panda From Jujutsu Kaisen a Real Panda? Here's The Truth
So what exactly is Panda — and is he actually a real panda? The answer is way more interesting than you'd expect.
No, Panda Is Not a Real Panda
Let's get straight to it.
Despite his name and appearance, Panda is not an actual panda. He is an Abrupt-Mutation Cursed Corpse created by Masamichi Yaga, the principal of Tokyo Jujutsu High.
So why does he look like one? Simply put — that's just how Yaga built him. The panda-shaped body is essentially a vessel, a construct powered by cursed energy rather than biology.
Unlike typical cursed corpses, Panda possesses a high level of sentience, emotions, and intelligence — with a jovial and friendly personality that often belies his combat prowess.
In other words: he looks like a stuffed animal, thinks like a strategist, and fights like a monster.
What Exactly Is a Cursed Corpse?
To understand Panda, you need to understand what a cursed corpse actually is.
Cursed corpses are a result of a cursed spirit taking host in an inanimate object, allowing them to take physical form. Some sorcerers have the ability to induce an artificial curse on an inanimate doll — a process achieved through cursed corpse cores.
Masamichi Yaga is one of those rare sorcerers. He can breathe life — and full sentience — into inanimate dolls using his cursed technique. Panda is the most advanced result of that ability.
Panda is fully sentient, emotional, and considers Yaga his parent. Yaga was eventually executed by the jujutsu higher-ups specifically because creating self-aware cursed corpses like Panda was considered too dangerous. Panda's existence is both Yaga's greatest achievement and the reason Yaga died.
That's the emotional weight hiding underneath all the comedy.
Panda's Three Cores — The Real Secret
Here's where it gets genuinely fascinating. Most cursed corpses have one core. Panda has three.
Panda isn't a regular cursed corpse — this sentient puppet is imbued with three different cursed cores. Each core has its own identity, meaning Panda plays host to two other individuals who he refers to as his "siblings."
Each core also comes with distinct powers:
Core 1 — Panda (The Balanced One)
Panda's core has been described as a more balanced identity, with a mix of level-headed rationality and superhuman strength. While Panda doesn't boast any special techniques like his Gorilla counterpart, he makes up for it through high cursed energy and intelligenc.
Core 2 — Gorilla (The Powerhouse)
The Gorilla is Panda's brother that has hyper-reactive cursed energy. During this form, he becomes aggressive in fights and can unlock a special ability called the Unblockable Drumming Beat — with little force, the impact of his hits becomes powerful and critical, especially when aimed at the head. The downfall is that it drains Panda's cursed energy rapidly.
Core 3 — The Mystery Sister
The Triceratops core is yet to be fully revealed in the anime, though the manga has featured a glimpse of it. Panda himself describes this third sibling as shy — which only makes fans want to see it more.
How Do You Actually Defeat Panda?
This is where Panda's physiology makes him a genuinely terrifying opponent.
The only way to take him down is by destroying the cores of cursed energy that act as his heart. His body is extremely durable and can be reinforced using cursed energy.
During the Goodwill Exchange Event, Panda was found to have three cores, which allow him to survive devastating injuries. Destroy one core and he simply switches to another — essentially giving him multiple lives in a single battle.
Is Panda Still Alive in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Mild spoiler ahead.
In the Culling Game Arc, Panda suffers severe injuries at the hands of Hajime, who leaves only his head intact.
After his fight with Hajime Kashimo that resulted in the destruction of his body and his other two cores, Panda now appears much smaller than his original size, resembling a baby panda. It's one of the most heartbreaking moments in the series — a character who survived so much, reduced to a fraction of what he once was.
Why Panda Is More Than Just Comic Relief
Panda is often used as comic relief throughout the early series — even cited by creator Gege Akutami as being his main purpose during creation.
But as the series deepens, Panda becomes something far more complex. He is a being who questions what it means to exist — not human, not cursed spirit, not animal. Just Panda.
His presence in the series adds a layer of depth to the narrative, exploring themes of existence, identity, and the definition of life.
And perhaps most poignantly: the man who made him possible paid for it with his life.
