Indonesia claims air power in the South China Sea to defeat Singapore

Mytips.id, NEWS - Minister Coordinator for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, has recently announced a significant development in the transfer of the Flight Information Region (FIR) from Singapore to Indonesia.

This decision, approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), marks a pivotal moment in the management of Indonesian airspace.

In a recent statement, Minister Luhut highlighted the details of this milestone. He explained that Singapore had previously held control over the airspace above the Riau Islands and Natuna at altitudes of 0-37,000 feet.

However, with the official approval from ICAO, Indonesia will now reclaim full control over this FIR. This transfer is set to enhance the safety, competitiveness, and attractiveness of Indonesian airspace for the civil aviation industry.

Minister Luhut shared that he received confirmation of this transfer while undergoing health recovery in Singapore on January 11, 2024.

He expressed his satisfaction with the agreements reached, not only regarding the FIR but also on defense cooperation and extradition of fugitives between Indonesia and Singapore. These agreements signify a positive step towards resolving long-standing bilateral issues between the two countries.

The successful outcome of these negotiations was attributed to the diplomatic efforts of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long.

Minister Luhut reflected on the challenges faced during the process but emphasized the importance of prioritizing national interests throughout.

Prioritizing dialogue and maintaining open communication with all parties involved, including Singapore Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean, was central to Minister Luhut's approach.

This aligns with the instructions of President Jokowi and underscores the commitment to strengthening bilateral relations while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both nations.

As we move forward with the transfer of the FIR, Minister Luhut reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring safe and effective management of Indonesian airspace.

By adhering to international civil aviation standards and aligning with national interests, Indonesia aims to create an airspace environment that is conducive to growth and development in the aviation sector.
